Background and Location

Syokimau is a residential area in the west of Machakos CountyKenya, just south of Nairobi and neighbouring the  Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) The area is four hours drive from the coastal town of Mombasa (fourty five minutes actual flying time from the JKIA )

It   is named after the legendary Akamba medicine woman Prophetess Syokimau. Syokimau Prophesied the coming of the white people to Kenya and also prophesied the construction of the Mombasa to Kisumu railway line.

In her prophecy she said she could see non-africans arriving from the present day port of Mombasa and carrying fire in their pockets which was later to be understood as white people in vessels carrying matchboxes and guns. She prophesied seeing a long snake, whose head was in the Indian Ocean and the tail was in Lake Victoria (maybe signifying Nairobi-Kisumu railway)!!

 

Transport & Accessibility

The area hosts the national Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station linking Nairobi to the coastal town of Mombasa. A local station for shorter inland travel, including to and from the Nairobi CBD is also located here. It takes about four hours to ride by train to the Coastal towns Miritini Station for the SGR.  

Both railways stations have adequate parking slots, with the inland station facilitating faster commute, especially to the Nairobi CBD with the avoidance of traffic jams, not with-standing personal vehicle related driving costs.

The Nairobi Expressway, also starts and ends in the area. create a quick link to Nairobi South, Nairobi CBD, The Museum Hill and Westlands. 

Matatus (shared public transport service vehicles) and motor cycles are the regular mode of transport. For private travel, uber and other private service providers service the area.

Safety, Security & Governance

Local Residents Associations, such as Syokimau Residents Association, supplement the work of the regular police units in ensuring the security of residents. Most of the properties are also located in gated communities with enhanced private security, also applied in commercial premises.

Personal Amenities: Education & Medical

The available educational institutions offer both international and local curricula.  Some of the schools include:  Zuwena International School and Viraj International Academy.

Medical facilities in Syokimau  include the Aga Khan University Medical Center and Baspen Syokimau Cottage hospital.

Recreation and Shopping

Syokimau has a number of malls of with leading brands featured in the various stores, not forgetting major national supermarkets as anchor tenants.  These include Gateway Mall and  Signature Mall. The malls also offer a good selection of food restaurants, banks, ATMs, pharmacies, entertainment spots for the kids and have ample parking spaces.

Various locations also feature informal food places, many offering roast meat (“nyama choma”) and the usual Kenyan past-time of alcohol consumption. Swimming facilities are also in abundance.

Other Attractions

The African Heritage House features African cultural artifacts. They also provide catering facilities.

Uilities

The area is well served by Kenya Power and piped water is provided by Mavwasco (Mavoko water & Sewerage Company). Many private boreholes supplement the regular water supplies.

Property Developments

Many industrial investments have been established on the neighbouring Mombasa Road and in Athi River / Kitengela area (just off Mombasa Rd.) and 15-18 km from Syokimau, which increases demand for residential property around the area. Notable establishments along Mombasa Rd. include Nation Newspapers Publishing, royal mabati facory and Simba Cement. Others in Kitengela/Athi River include the East Africa Portland Cement (EAPC) and Bamburi Cement.

With the many industrial, commercial and other businesses in the area, residential communities abound.

Summary /Investment Prospects

Only 20km from Nairobi and also with many factories commercial and retail establishments, both at Syokimau and in the neighbouring Athi River and Kitengela suburbs, Syokimau is a great living location and also very attractive for property investments due to a high demand.
